Weekly News and Notes, November 14
Good afternoon,
We have a few updates from UHS this week, which has been a busy one!
First, on Wednesday, UHS hosted guests from several schools from across the Commonwealth, once again able to highlight a number of our programs and the way we have shifted learning. Our guests consistently remarked about the engagement they saw from students who were working on many hands-on, relevant, and authentic projects, from our Hospitality and Child Development classes, to film and graphic design, to grade 8 students learning about how best to collaborate and communicate with one another in the service of solving problems. As we look ahead, we are focusing on making sure that students reflect on their skills to get better, not only for the purpose of grading, but for the way they will tackle life beyond high school: through critical thinking, becoming more independent, solving problems, and working well with others.
We also spent time on Wednesday reviewing our budget requests for next year. We have consistently been sharing the same message: UHS is positioned well given the programs and staffing that we have. There are a couple of investments we would like to make our programs and supports for students even more robust; at the same time, we realize that there are needs across the community and the schools at large. Our goal in the process is to preserve and enhance as much as possible. We will be sharing out some of our priorities with the community as a whole, particularly since we just presented to the Budget Subcommittee. It will be important for the community to be engaged in the process, particularly as we have been seeing our population at UHS grow. (As an example, we now have more students in our grade 9 class than we had in grade 8 last year, so we need to be mindful of growing classes and needs).
We'll do our best to share information so families are prepared, particularly when it comes time to raise our voices at various meetings!

Athletics
Best of luck to football, field hockey, and cheer, as well as a couple of our cross country individuals, who are competing this weekend. Football faces Amesbury on Friday at 6:30 p.m., while Field Hockey faces Sandwich for a state title on Saturday evening, with a 5:00 p.m. start at Burlington High School. The cheer team has the regional championship this Saturday at Tantasqua, with the likely performance time around 11:00 a.m.
Earlier this week we hosted a national signing day for six members of our senior class, all of whom will be competing in Division I athletics next year: Erin O'Day (Softball, UMass), Lola Grube (Softball, Central Connecticut), Amelia Blood (field hockey, Wake Forest), Julianna Casucci (field hockey, UNH), Kendall Gilmore (field hockey, Maryland), and Julia Okenquist (field hockey, Holy Cross). We also had two boys, Cody Veneziano (baseball, Assumption) and Willem Haker (baseball, CCSU) indicate their commitments and who will have signing ceremonies later this year. It is unusual for a school our size to have this level of success in placing students at the next level!
School Play This Weekend
The UHS drama club presents their fall production of "The Murderous Mansion of Mr. Uno". A mystery and comedy about a set of eccentric characters trapped in a house together where shenanigans ensue and maybe a murder or two. Shows are November 14th at 7:00pm, Saturday, November 15th at 2:00 and 7:00pm and Sunday November 16th at 2:00pm. We hope many will come out to check out what promises to be a great show!
Have a great weekend!
