Weekly News and Notes, September 5
We have a few updates from UHS this week.
Student Organization Meetings
On Friday, our Student Council organized an activity fair that also included some class meetings, review of schoolwide expectations, and opportunities to connect with school counselors. It was also an opportunity for our students to get a sense of the different clubs and activities that exist at UHS, as well as to indicate interest. Staff Interns
While much has focused on getting student interns out to work and onboarded these past couple of weeks, we are excited to share that we have three interns working with our staff as they prepare for licensure. First, MiShayla Silver will be interning with Ms. Ritacco in preparation for her work to become a school psychologist. In addition, we will be hosting two Occupational Therapy interns: Cristian Ramirez and Tricia Baniqued. We look forward to providing them with a great experience with our community this year.
Student Forms
We will be sharing forms for both biographical and medical information for parent updates in the next week or so. If there is anything urgent, feel free to reach out to the school office or Ms. Schiller, our school nurse.
Meet the Teacher Night
Meet the Teacher night will be Thursday, September 11, starting at 6:00. Here's the way the schedule will look:
- 6:00 Start
- 6:05-6:15 A block
- 6:20-6:30 B Block
- 6:35-6:45 C Block
- 6:50-7:00 D Block
- 7:05-7:15 E Block
- 7:20-7:30 F Block
- 7:35-7:45 G Block (First block of Day 2)
It would be helpful if you brought a copy of the student schedule to this, but we will have the ability to make hard copies.
Review of Expectations
During the afternoon we also had the opportunity to review schoolwide expectations with students. This included, for seniors, sharing our expectations regarding senior privilege and internship blocks, and for the entire school our rules around the cafeteria, hallway traffic, and maintaining a sense of order in the building. As is typically the case, our students have been extremely respectful, particularly as we start the year, and we anticipate that every now and then we will need to have some reminders about what is required in the building. We also discussed cell phones, in that the rules at UHS are that they should be off and out of sight during class time and that, with upperclassmen especially, we intend to continue managing cell phone use as best we can, without moving toward a ban.
Cafeteria Position
We have an opening in our cafeteria, working basically 9:30-12:30 every day, while we have someone out for the next month or so. If anyone is interested, please reach out to Alison Weir, Food Service Director, or Janice Ouelette, our UHS Kitchen Manager.
Bus Passes
We handed out bus passes today to those students who were available and attentive to the process. We were able to distribute a little more than half of them. Students who did not receive their bus pass should check on Monday, as we will distribute during lunch. However, some were not available, and in those cases, it is best to check with the superintendent's office regarding registration.
Fall Sports are underway! Girls soccer earned a hard-fought 4-4 tie with BMR earlier this week, while the boys defeated Quabbin. Golf earned a win over Millbury. Field hockey and both boys and girls soccer are in action on Friday.
