UHS: Weekly News and Notes

Greetings, 

We have a few updates from the high school following what has been a very smooth and overall successful opening week.

Before getting into a few simple updates, as we don't have too many things to share this week, we wanted to comment on the general vibe and feeling in the building over these past few days. Whenever a class graduates and a new one enters the building, a shift occurs, and it is the same every year: seniors we have grown to know and with whom we have worked closely have graduated, and a new group, Young and unpolished, enters the school, needing to establish itself and adapt to different routines and expectations. If the first few days of the year are any indication as to the year we are going to have together, it has been remarkably positive. 

Now, it is important to know that we have changed many routines, from the accessibility of cell phones during class time, the traffic patterns in the morning, to the availability of breakfast, all intended to minimize disruption and improve logistics. The students and staff have responded well, and walking around the building, as we have emphasized building connections in the first few days of school, it has been great to see the community engaged. We know that school years are hardly perfect, particularly as we are dealing with teenagers and young adults. There will be days when students will try and skirt rules, where a quiz or test will go awry, a friendship will hit a bump, or a late night or busy schedule will make coming to the building at 7:15 a.m. more difficult. However, we do truly believe that if we can build up as much goodwill as possible in these first few weeks, it will certainly make overcoming those challenges a smoother process. It is a formula that has worked well for us at UHS over the past several years.

On to some brief updates:

UHS Grant Recipient

The Massachusetts Life Sciences Center (MLSC) shared that Uxbridge High School is the recipient of an Elementary and Secondary Education Grant in the amount of $57,552.00, including $52,092.00 allocated for equipment/supplies and $5,460.00 allocated for teacher professional development. This will allow us to purchase PCR materials for use in biology classes, as well as Vernier Pro sensors, which will also be used in science experiments, lab testing, and biomedical design, including looking at DNA.

Club and Activity Meetings

Over the next couple of weeks, many of our clubs and activities will be hosting their introductory meetings for the year. Most of these will take place during the school day, but some will take place in the after school hours. In the morning, and we also post them to the monitors that are found in the school building.
